Mosaic Shelters for the 5th
century Byzantine Church of the Apostles and Church of
Virgin Mary [Jordan]
Design of labor intensive shelters built by locals, to protect archaeological
sites with mosaic floors from 5th century AD.
Service also included construction
of the shelters, project management, suspended walkways and treatment
of surrounding.
Project involved design and construction efforts based on maximum
possible labor for unskilled local community, guidelines of archaeologists
relevant to the sites and creation of structures in harmony with archaeology,
but yet clearly distinct from the archaeological remains.
The labor intensive techniques
involved the true use of the structural arches built of scrap stone
and ways of scaffolding to hold arches spanning as much as 16.2m;
so far the biggest span of any masonry arch in Jordan.
