Nazareth Mosque
Design of Mosque through wining an international
competition. Project involved design with a critical urban context and
complicated social / political / religious controversy.
Design of mosque had to harmonize with adjacent
Church of Annunciation in Nazareth, as well as with the historical urban
context.
The controversy that made this a world famous
site was approached by the Israeli government to call for International
non-Israeli architects to design the mosque.
The winning design was based on carefully- proportioned
traditional Palestinian Mosque inspired by the 19th century style and
involving building traditions with relevant stone masonry and building
crafts.
After completion of detailed designs, the construction
was cancelled altogether for political reasons.
www.NazarethMosque.com
has been prepared by architect Ammar Khammash, to show the mosque design
that has won the international competition, and the architectural and
urban concerns of this location within the historical core of old Nazareth.
This website aims to clarify the physical context
of the Nazareth Mosque project, and to present the Urban fabric and
history of a building that created international alarm
and dispute.
