For
the past twenty years Ammar Khammash has contributed to the protection
of architectural heritage in Jordan. His efforts in this field produced
Jordan's first renovation projects, and helped establish a movement
on the way of protection of the traditional built environments.
With
the absence of official policies in regard to the preservation and sustainable
use of architectural heritage, Jordan is continuously losing part of
its history, a quality most fragile and most relevant to us. Only isolated
fragments will endure to be seen by our grandchildren. These few examples
have been preserved by individuals, so that through them we may pass
into the future with a clearer vision of a shared cultural identity.
Architecture
can be seen as a record of past decisions. New decisions can be added,
provided that they do not erase, distort or overpower previous ones.
New intervention at Darat al Funun was kept visible and with maximum
reversibility.
